Eight Belles injured her two front ankles after the 134th Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
She finished second to Big Brown in the 2008 Kentucky Derby, a race won by only three fillies in the past. She collapsed during her cool-down after the race. She suffered compound fractures of both front ankles and was euthanized immediately following the race because of the nature of the injury.
Eight Belles is a gray Thoroughbred and the only female racehorse to join the derby today, owned by Fox Hill Farms.
